It's perhaps not shocking that not all economists agree on the idea of "fair trade." Below is an article from the Economist magazine which engages the debate from two different perspectives.

This is another article which explains some of the unintended consequences of fair trade. The "fair trade" example is particularly illustrative for many purposes. In particular, it is a great way to discuss that intentions do not equal consequences. That is, even though those who support the idea of fair trade may have the best interest of poorer populations at heart, we can see using very simple economics that they may be harming the very people they intend to help.
